Fighting Evil by Moonlight ☆ Eat all I can by Daylight

My name is Amanda and I am enrolled in the fashion design program at Palomar College. I am 21 years old and I am heavily inspiried by unique looks that support individuality. I am a fanatic about street fashion from all over the world, but I draw most of my ideas from the streets of Tokyo.

Betsey Johnson Applies for Bankrupcy
Due to declining sales, Betsey Johnson will be closing 63 boutiques. I can’t say I didn’t see it coming, after seeing the products end up in discount stores like Rue La La, Myhabit and TJMaxx.
It’s such a shame that this high end, colorful retailer will be downsizing. She opened her first boutique in 1978 in SoHo New York.
Betsey Johnson is one of my favorite designers and a huge inspiration to me. I’m glad that her clothes can still be found in Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.
PS. I do remember being treated poorly when I visited the boutique at the Fashion Valley mall, maybe declining sales had to do with attitude of employees too?

I made some animated gifs of my dress from the 2012 MODA Fashion Show!

I just love the way it moves. It was a great experience being a part of the show, I hope to put in more pieces for next year.

Yasutaka Funakoshi brought a taste of Tokyo’s unique goth subculture — yes it is still alive and well — to Japan fashion week.

Alice Auaa RTW Fall 2012

These are some of my favorite outfits from the show! It’s wonderful to see how Tokyo’s goth culture influences fashion and vis versa.

On May 10th, the anniversary of the tsunami/earthquake devastation last year, The Japan Consulate of Los Angeles put together a festival thanking all the support Japan received for the disaster relief. The festival was an all day thing that involved booths and venders taking over Grove! There was Japanese cuisine, sake tasting, a traditional kimono fashion show, taiko drum performance and a special autograph session by Tokidoki co-founder and creative director Simone Legno.

I had the wonderful opportunity to model in the Japanese street style fashion show which showcased different street styles like lolita, mori girl, fairy kei, visual kei/punk, gyaru, wa-lolita and Sanrio fashions. The show was collaborated by the street promotion team Bubblepunch whom I’ve worked with in the past. It was really exciting to be surrounded by so much awesome talent for such a great event!

Zandra Rhodes FW12 Fashion Show and Retrospective

12:06 pm

Check out this stunning video of the Zandra Rhodes catwalk and retrospective! What’s great about this is the beginning looks in the video are all vintage looks by Zandra from the last few decades going on since the 60s and continues seamlessly into her new line.

What’s amazing about all of these looks are incredibly modern, but I’ve seen several of these looks in the Mengei museum for the Zandra Rhodes exhibit!

I absolutely love the looks and all the styling! My fashion show presentation teacher was actually in Paris coordinating this show last week, which I really admire!

Topshop to open first LA store

UK based fast fashion retailer is planning on opening their fourth US location in Los Angeles! They are planning on having it open by fourth quarter this year but it could be held back to spring 2013.

They’re moving into a space that is over 25,000 square feet!

If you can’t wait until then, you could always go to the new location opening March 8th in Las Vegas!

I’m pretty excited about Topshop branching out here, hopefully this will get some healthy competition in for H&M and Forever21.

Hip-hop star gives designer a leg-up to fame
Article by David Hoenigman for The Japan Times
Shojono Tomo, literally translated as “friend of little girls”, has a wild and vivid imagination. Not much has changed since her childhood growing up in the 1970’s where she would bring home garbage and make up intricate stories about her characters.
She is first and foremost an artist but her recent fame has been for her fashion brand EnocDouter. International interest skyrocketed when rap artist Nicki Minaj wore her leggings on Good Morning America.

“And I loved her fashion sense — very unbalanced, playful and quirky like my own. I felt a definite connection and I was very excited that she wanted to wear my designs.” - Shojono Tomo on Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj has been plugging this talented artist ever since, wearing an entire outfit to the MTV Video Awards in 2011 and more recently in a verse in Ester Dean’s Gimme Money in which the verse goes “I am up in Hong Kong rocking Shojono Tomo!”
Shojono Tomo has visited Los Angeles herself last November for the Sweet Street Art Exhibition in which I had the opportunity to personally meet her! I am astounded by how she can use her imagination to create a wonderful world and invite you in. I can only hope that I can meet her again!

Jeremy Scott : Fall/Winter 2012 Ready-to-Wear New York

Designer : Jeremy Scott

It’s NY fashion week, and I just watched Jeremy Scott’s F/W 2012 RTW show streaming live online here! I love pretty much everything about these outfits, I love the audience, I love the music.

These looks really speak to my “techno” generation with the cursors, emoticons and window display motifs but also with great vibrant colors and mixed media.

These are just some of my favorites from the show, there are loads more!

Rune Boutique
Last December I jumped at the opportunity to volunteer Rune Boutique! The event was organized by Bubblepunch and brought together famous pioneers of the kawaii movement!
Rune Naito 6% Doki DokiKyary Pamyu Pamyu
were just some of the major contenders! There was a fashion show for 6% Doki Doki (girls and men’s lines) and a musical performance by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu! Also shopping opportunites to buy 6% Doki Doki clothing and accessories and Rune merchandise based on his famous illustrations. Only the 10,000 SF location of the Royal T artspace could hold such an event!
As a volunteer I got to experience behind the scenes of event planning! My job was to take care of the models, make sure they knew where they needed to be and keep them fed, hydrated and happy! I think this was the easiest job I could have got because most of the models were my friends! I also did a lot of “networking” if you can call it that. I was just making friends and conversation!
If you’d like to see photos from the event, TokyoFashion.com has great photo coverage of the event here!
